Common Wedding Invitation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Ordering wedding invitations involves more than choosing a design you love. Small mistakes in wording, timing, quantities, or printing can lead to unnecessary stress, additional costs, or delays.
The good news is that most of these issues are easy to avoid with proper planning. At Julia Kay Design, couples are guided through each step of the invitation process so they can order with confidence and avoid common pitfalls.
Ordering Invitations Too Late
One of the biggest mistakes couples make is waiting too long to begin the invitation process.
Wedding invitations should generally be mailed 8 to 12 weeks before the wedding, but that doesn't mean you should start shopping at that point. You'll also need time for design, revisions, printing, assembly, and addressing.
We recommend ordering invitations at least 3 months prior to your wedding! Starting early gives you flexibility and allows time for editing and revisions.
Ordering the Wrong Quantity
Many couples assume they need one invitation per guest, but invitations are typically ordered per household.Β For example, a family of four living at one address only needs one invitation suite.
It's also a good idea to order a few extra copies for keepsakes, photography, and last-minute guest additions.
Forgetting to Proofread Everything
Before approving your invitations for print, carefully look over:
- Names
- Dates
- Ceremony and reception times
- Venue addresses
- Wedding website
- RSVP deadline
- Dress code
- Accommodation information
Having someone outside of the couple review the proofs can also help catch details you may have overlooked.
Choosing Style Over Readability
Decorative fonts and elaborate layouts can be beautiful, but your invitations still need to clearly communicate information to your guests.Β
They should be able to easily identify the date, time, location, and RSVP instructions without struggling to read the text.Β
All of our semi-custom invitations are made with this in mind! If you're looking for a classic and timeless suite, our Boldly Bright Collection is the perfect contender. Or if you're looking for something a bit more modern and refined be sure to check out our Rusty Peach Collection.

Not Considering Postage
Postage is often one of the last details couples think about, but it should be considered before invitations are printed and assembled.
The bigger your mail piece, the more it will cost to mail. The size, weight, thickness, and embellishments you choose can all affect postage costs.Β
Working with a professional invitation designer helps ensure your suite is designed with mailing requirements in mind so there are no surprises when it's time to send everything out.
Overlooking Day-Of Stationery
Many couples focus entirely on invitations and wait until the last minute to think about menus, place cards, seating charts, and signage.
Planning these items alongside your invitation suite helps maintain a cohesive design throughout the wedding. It also allows plenty of time for production instead of trying to fit everything into the final weeks before the wedding.
Trying to Make Every Decision Alone
With so many paper types, printing methods, embellishments, and wording options available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.
Working with an experienced stationery designer removes much of that uncertainty. Instead of researching every option yourself, you'll receive recommendations based on your wedding style, budget, and timeline.
